Good morning!
If you’re up at 7 a.m. like I am, now is a great time to apply for jobs, even if you already have one. Sort by last 24 hours on LinkedIn, or use this search query on google:
site:greenhouse.io | site:lever.co | site:dover.com "product manager" USA United States
If there’s an ATS screening your application, it might take the “first 50” that pass the criteria so the earlier the better. And you have more luck pinging recruiters if they are just beginning the search.
If you’re not up at 7 a.m., you can maybe try having a dream about a small alien civilization that has never thought about going to the stars.
Now, coffee:
What’s new, Jude?
Quick aside [skip to bullet points to see café list]
Great news! I found a google maps scraper that allows me to get a bunch of new coffee shops straight from the google maps API—which means I get all the coffee shops available instead of just some.
If you didn’t know this already, google maps doesn’t show you all the places even if you zoom in. An algorithm looks at popular places, places people interact with on gmaps, and places that pay for advertising to find out which to show you.
That’s all to say that you might be missing out if the concentration of cafés near you is pretty high.
No more!
It is a little tricky to look through hundreds of cafés to see which are new though.
Here’s some:
Zinnie’s Cafe — Harlem — Right next to Plowshares and Maison Harlem [a very popular brunch spot]
The REP Music Cafe — Bed-Stuy — Live music spot. On Mondays you can get a muffin and medium coffee for $5.00
Lela’s Kitchen — Bensonhurst/Mapleton — Are you really going to go all the way out there to try this one? It’s okay, you can stay at home.
Ricotta Coffee — Prospect Lefferts Gardens — It’s definitely more of a bakery/café than a coffee shop, but you could spend a lovely morning here.
Pando’s Creperie & Cafe — Crown Heights — They look like they have infused cold brews
Krave-It Cafe — Staten Island — It’s a loud looking place
Brew Bar — Staten Island — “Coffee with Character”. And yes, they do have a s’mores latté. And these incredible chairs.
Thē Soirēe — Hell’s Kitchen — I might do this as the next feature. Looks expensive, though.
Break time!
I’m asking you to click this button and share it to your social media. This publication is built on the hard labor-backs of me (and definitely no small helpers). Marketing is about as much work as actually making this newsletter, so your clicky click helps.
And the oompa loompas are terrible at marketing.
And now…
Coffee news!
Oatly’s got a new creamer that’s hit the shelves! Right now it’s got a vanilla flavor, but I reckon there’s a second as well
Café Integral is now offering “El Bosque”, a new coffee from Julio Peralta [from Nicaragua it seems]
A genome study is tracing Arabica back 610,000 years from the forests of Ethiopia. We’ve only discovered it about 2500 years ago
La Colombe released
another piece of garbage“world’s frothiest draft latte” X Chobani [X crocs, X Lil’ Yatchy X Obama]Another robot that rolls around and gives people coffee. Hyundai this time
A Philz Coffee in Berkeley California unionized! Hooray. This comes after it sent employees home in December wearing pro-Palestine pins.
Sprout, a new company, is giving “crop insurance” and satellite climate predictions to coffee farmers.
This thing is making cold brew in less than 3 hours. I can make espresso in 30 seconds. I’m going to find an even sooner oat!
Nestlé created a database to better track development on new strains/species of coffee that can survive in harsher conditions. It’s a similar thing to what we did for covid—you track all of the variations within the genome to see what changes impact what traits.
The Recipe Section
I know, I know, I didn’t have a recipe last week either. I did create one this week, but between it being vile and it being nasty, I decided it couldn’t make the cut.
If you are super curious, you can go purchase some ramps at your local farmer’s market for $6 and put them in a pot for an hour and see if you like it.
By the way, my original ramp plug, the potato stand, is retired from the Union Square farmer’s market and I am likely going to succumb to a vacuous hole of depression at the lack of ‘la ratte’ potatoes [you just need them, you know?].
Thanks for tuning in!
If you or a loved one has an extra $5458.80 lying around, you can purchase a coveted “www.coffee.nyc” domain and donate it to a friend.
Which friend? I’m not sure. It could be anybody. You could donate it to anyone you know. Nobody in particular, really, should have it more than anyone else…
Not here, certainly.
Enjoy your coffee!
